"What's your word, Mr. H?"

Update for Dec 8-12

This weekend, I ran across the journal pictured above and I had to buy it.  I like that it's a great reminder for me to stay focused on what really matters in my life and at school. Words are so powerful and can be used to lift ourselves and help us remember to stay focus on what's important.

This week, we held our second School Community Meeting to share out the words we felt best completed the statement "At Alton Darby Elementary, We Are __________!"

While all of the words used were different, they all reflected that students feel that our learning community is a welcoming and positive place to be.  This is to the credit of the staff and families who have helped to create and nurture a positive culture.

On Tuesday, I was out and about in classrooms and during a conversation with a student, she asked "What's your word, Mr. H?"

This was something I struggled with during this little project.  It's hard for me to choose just one word to represent what I feel reflects our school.  But it was a struggle for others so why shouldn't I struggle too?

But honestly, I think the best way for me to complete the statement is by using all of the words that were generated.  And that's exactly how I answered the student:

"I didn't actually pick a word because it's important that I represent and support all of the words that were used. I pick everyone's word because I am the principal for all of you."

Was that the easy way out? Maybe. But what will be the real challenge for me is making sure the work we do supports and encourages the words our kids and staff used to reflect how they feel about our school. Because at Alton Darby Elementary, We Are...
Community, Diverse, Resolvers, Strong, Together, Family, Team Players, Hard Workers, Love, Democracy, Smart, Teamwork, Believers, Creatives, Yummy, Individualized, Turstworthy, Together, Powerful, Higgenbawesome, Kind, Possibilities, Poised, and Unique!

Students' Voice: Empowering Transformation

Worth a watch/listen -- Good conversation about student voice in the school day. Pernille talks about what is possible and what is reality.  I think she will affirm many of our thoughts and beliefs about school.

Also -- Pernille wrote a book that I am reading called "Empowered Schools, Empowered Students" that is also apart of the Corwin Connected Educator Series

This series includes books by mostly practicing teachers and principals and they are terrific as far as driving new ideas (And they are about 70 pages each).  I am enjoying them and I thought you might too: http://www.corwin.com/books/Book245107?subject=C00&seriesId=Series2504&fs=1

Schools that work for kids -- My favorite line from this is "We've made school work really well for us [teachers]." Thanks to Cathy Mere for sharing!

Community Mindset

Update for Nov 10-14

This year, we are investigating how Blended Learning can help us redefine the work we do with our students.

These seven characteristics "create an environment  where students and teachers learn and teach more effectively. Blended learning can provide students with choice and voice in their learning and is dynamically customized for each student, reaching students of varying learning styles."

On Friday, we attempted our first Community Meeting of the year to celebrate our accomplishments so far and to begin the work of defining the key principles we stand for as a learning community.  We gave students a voice in this process by asking each homeroom to complete the phrase: "At Alton Darby Elementary, we are ______________."  I am excited to see what students think best completes this statement.

As I was reflecting on Friday's meeting, I thought about one of the Blended Learning characteristics called Community Mindset.  Honestly, I am still learning what these characteristics mean for the work that we do. But I am excited when I think about what we've accomplished so far this year. Consider the definition for Community Mindset:

The district culture is one in which teachers and students are empowered and inspired to teach and learn from one another. Learning is a partnership and a shared experience in a student centered classroom. Student learning is personalized and encourages critical thinking.

When I think about Friday's meeting, I believe that we are establishing a partnership with our students and providing them with a voice in their learning. Thank you so much for your support, ideas, and encouragement! Let's keep this momentum going!

Powered by The Arts

Update for November 3-7

This week brought us another reminder of how talented our Arts Team is.  The Fall Concert that Mrs. Root created with students was an absolutely amazing experience.

When we combine the Fall Concert with the Warrior Dash and Dot Day, we can begin to understand how much the Arts can impact a school’s culture.

We strive each day to create learning experiences that focus on skills such as collaboration, communication, critical thinking and creativity because we believe these skills are going to enable our students to be successful in discovering their passions.  The arts, and those who bring learning to life through the arts, help us create a learning culture that focuses on these important skills.

Thank you Mrs. Bowers, Mr. Burkhart, and Mrs. Root for continuing to inspire us to celebrate learning through the arts!

-Mr. H

First School Community Meeting!

When you walk into our building, each person can see our mission that was establish on the very first day of school in 2001: Children.

This year, we are continuing the work of establishing and communicating the common expectations for all members of our community through the PBIS Framework. When we take steps to reestablish the principles of our community, it is important that we also work towards our Mission and ensure that kids have a voice in the process.

Therefore we will be having our first School Community Meeting this Friday!

After discussing how we were going to elicit feedback from students about their beliefs about what makes Alton Darby, we decided we need to start by getting everyone together to celebrate our accomplishments so far this year and to give us all a task we will work to complete.

And this is how it will happen:
  • 8:50 -- Student arrive and go immediately to the gym before going to homeroom.
    • Breakfast students will go to breakfast as usual. They will join us when they are finished.
    • Teachers will be in the gym to help get students organized. I will have a seating chart for you SOON.
    • We will be leading the students in a cheer - “We...Are...Alton...Darby!”.

  • 9:05 -- Mr. H starts the meeting by welcoming everyone, explaining why we are together, and then explaining the task everyone will work to complete.
    • Task - Homeroom teachers will facilitate students in completing this phrase: “At Alton Darby Elementary, WE ARE _____________!”
    • You will will be given a blank Puzzle Piece to write the word you decide reflects your room.
  • 9:15 -- Students are dismissed to homeroom.

A 10 minute meeting that is going to help us do something BIG!  Thanks to Jay, Angie, Karen O, Kim, Missy, Adrianna, Carla, Jane, Kris and Tiffany for your help with the planning!  And thanks to everyone for helping to make our first School Community Meeting a success!

The Importance of Expectations

Update for September 2-5

Coming together is a beginning, staying together is progress,
and working together is success. —Henry Ford

The first several weeks of school were always my favorite part of the year when I was in the classroom.  It was the time when the students and I focused our efforts into learning about each other, working together and establishing our classroom community.

One aspect to building a classroom community that I didn't work as hard on during my first years of teaching was setting expectations in a way that were clear for students.  I have learned that this lack of attention to setting expectations was the source of so many of my frustrations when kids made what I thought was a poor decision.  The reality was that they probably didn’t really understand what my expectations really were.

What I mean by this is that even though I would say things like, “We need to clean up at the end of the day,” my fourth grade students would still leave the classroom a mess.  I thought I had covered my expectations by simply saying “we need to clean up”. But what does that mean? And are we all actually thinking the same thing when we hear “we need to clean up”?

A couple of years later, I read an article that helped me understand that it was me and not my kids who didn't understand.  I didn’t understand that fourth graders, developmentally speaking, couldn’t just hear a command and then take care of it.  Fourth graders actually benefit from being taught routines with clear and explicit expectations and then practicing them.

As I visit classrooms each day, I can see that we as a staff understand what I did not as a new teacher. We understand that it takes time to develop routines; to explain them, to practice them and to truly understand them. We know that it’s okay to take time to do this because it will benefit kids and our classroom environments in the long-run.

We are already addressing one of our Areas of Focus, Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports, and I am excited to continue building off of the work we have done in that area as we continue to build our learning community.
